UN expert urges Togo to release human rights defender Abdoul Aziz Goma
GENEVA (23 December 2025) – The Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders, Mary Lawlor*, today renewed her call on authorities in Togo to release Togolese-Irish citizen and human rights defender Abdoul Aziz Goma from prison on the seventh anniversary of his arrest.
“Abdoul has now been arbitrarily detained for seven years and has been on hunger strike since 8 November 2025, protesting against the injustices he has faced. As he marks his 44th day without food, I am seriously concerned for his life,” Lawlor said.
Abdoul Aziz Goma was arrested in Lomé in 2018 after providing shelter to a group of young people who had travelled to the capital to demonstrate. Although he did not participate in any protests himself, Aziz Goma offered help to the youths when approached by an acquaintance.
Aziz Goma was initially held in secret for a number of years before being transferred to Togo’s formal prison system in 2022. He has been reportedly subjected to ill-treatment and denial of adequate medical care in prison, which have left him with a debilitating health condition.
In February 2025, when he was finally tried, Aziz Goma was convicted on multiple charges, including undermining national security, in a single day procedure and sentenced to ten years in prison.
“The Togolese Criminal Procedure Code provides for conditional release of prisoners who have served at least half of their sentence,” the expert said.
“Abdoul fits this criterion and has applied for such a release. Given his severe ill health, he also meets the criteria outlined by the President of the Council of Ministers on 2 December 2025 for cases to be considered for clemency.”
“I urge the President to find a way, through one of these mechanisms, to immediately secure Abdoul’s release.”
Aziz Goma is reportedly very weak from hunger and reduced to spending much of the day lying down.
In September 2023, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention determined that Aziz Goma’s ongoing detention was arbitrary.
The Special Rapporteur has also raised her concerns about Aziz Goma’s treatment and ongoing detention with Togolese authorities in 2021 and 2024.

GENEVE (23 décembre 2025) – La Rapporteuse spéciale sur la situation des défenseurs des droits humains, Mary Lawlor*, a renouvelé aujourd’hui son appel aux autorités togolaises pour qu’elles libèrent Abdoul Aziz Goma, citoyen togolais-irlandais et défenseur des droits humains, à l’occasion du septième anniversaire de son arrestation.
« Abdoul est arbitrairement détenu depuis sept ans et le 8 novembre 2025, il a entamé une grève de la faim pour protester contre les injustices qu’il a subies. Alors qu’il entame son 44e jour sans nourriture, je crains pour sa survie », a déclaré Mme Lawlor.
Abdoul Aziz Goma a été arrêté à Lomé en 2018 après avoir offert un abri à un groupe de jeunes militants venus dans la capitale pour manifester. Bien qu’il n’ait participé à aucune manifestation, il a accepté d’offrir son aide à la demande d’une connaissance.
Aziz Goma a été détenu secrètement pendant plusieurs années avant d’être transféré dans le système pénitentiaire officiel du Togo en 2022. Il aurait subi des mauvais traitements et été privé de soins médicaux adéquats en prison, ce qui lui a causé une grave détérioration de son état de santé.
En février 2025, lorsqu’il a enfin été jugé, M. Aziz Goma a été condamné à dix ans de prison à l’issue d’une procédure expéditive d’une journée, pour plusieurs chefs d’accusation, dont atteinte à la sécurité nationale.
« Le Code de procédure pénale togolais prévoit la libération conditionnelle des prisonniers ayant purgé au moins la moitié de leur peine », a indiqué l’experte.
« Abdoul remplit ce critère et a demandé une telle libération. Étant donné son état de santé très grave, il répond également aux critères définis par le Président du Conseil des ministres le 2 décembre 2025 dans les cas pouvant bénéficier d’une mesure de clémence. »
« J’exhorte le Président à trouver un moyen, par l’un de ces mécanismes, de garantir immédiatement la libération d’Abdoul. »
Aziz Goma serait aujourd’hui très affaibli par la faim et passerait la majeure partie de la journée allongé.
En septembre 2023, le Groupe de travail des Nations Unies sur la détention arbitraire a conclu que la détention continue d’Aziz Goma était arbitraire.
La Rapporteuse spéciale a également exprimé ses préoccupations concernant le traitement et la détention prolongée d’Aziz Goma auprès des autorités togolaises en 2021 et 2024.
