Asesinato del hijo de la defensora Rosario Zavala

Ulises, son of murdered Woman Human Rights Defender Rosario Zavala, has been shot dead. Rosario Zavala was killed in 2020 for her work searching for the disappeared in Guanajuato, Mexico, among them her other son Yatziri. To date, no one has been held accountable for either her murder or the disappearance of Yatziri.

In March 2020, when I presented my report on killings of Human Rights Defenders to the UN Human Rights Council, Mexico publicly committed to “eradicating” impunity. But when I wrote a communication to them a few months later asking about the killing of Rosario Zavala, they didn’t even reply.

The case reminds me of Human Rights Defenders Javier and María del Tránsito, who I met in Dublin last month. They also work to demand truth & justice for the families of missing persons in Guanajuato, Mexico but after both of their children were killed, they left the state.

Search collectives in Guanajuato and their families can’t wait any longer. How many more HRDs and their families must be killed before they receive adequate protection & killings are properly investigated?
