Earlier this month, I provided input to the Canadian Government’s review of the Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise (the CORE). While the creation of the CORE in 2019 was a positive step towards providing a route for human rights defenders and communities around the world to hold Canadian companies in high-risk sectors to account for undermining their rights, it was not given the powers needed to truly deliver on this promise. I am calling for the significant strengthening of the CORE, to see it transformed into a real route of redress and a mechanism that could truly contribute to encouraging business practice that respects human rights.
