Environmental Human Rights Defenders protect the environment, and the human rights associated with it. They often face great personal risk for their work, which can face opposition from large multinational corporations, powerful political figures and other individuals who have interests in infrastructure projects, extractive industries and other activities that are harming the environment and damaging local or traditional communities.
According to the Special Rapporteur’s report to the 46th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, Environmental Defenders are among the most at risk of threats and killings than any other category of Human Rights Defender.
