Hearing with Sudanese human rights defenders

Last month, I participated in a hearing with human rights defenders from Sudan. I hoped to hear from defenders in the country about their work and any challenges they might be facing, in particular defenders working outside the capital.

On the day of the hearing, despite a power shortage in the country, seven human rights defenders were able to connect. Speaking from different parts of the country, they painted a vibrant picture of their efforts to increase awareness of human rights in Sudan since the overthrow of former President Omar Al-Bashir, and spoke powerfully about the need to improve the institutional framework for protecting and defending human rights in the country. I’m extremely grateful to all those who took the time to take part.

The specific difficulties faced by women human rights defenders developed into an important theme during the hearing, as well as in the information submitted by the defenders in advance. Women from both rural and urban areas spoke about the risk of social stigmatisation ran by women promoting human rights in the country, as well as how such work challenged the structures and norms of society, and highlighted the extreme challenges faced when working on issues of sexual and domestic violence.

The defenders also expressed concerns about recent limitations on the freedoms of opinion, expression and association, risks for defenders advocating for transitional justice or a role for the International Criminal Court in Sudan, and difficulties faced by defenders on the ground in Darfur.

I intend to keep in touch with the defenders who were present over the course of my mandate.
