I am deeply saddened to hear the news that environmental Woman Human Rights Defender, Joannah Stutchbury, was shot dead on 15 July 2021 outside of her home. I am told that she has in the past received multiple death threats. As emphasised in my report to the Human Rights Council this year, threats very often lead to killings and environmental defenders are more at risk than any other category of Human Rights Defender. I welcome the statement from the President of Kenya, denouncing the killing and recognising Joannah’s legitimate work.
Joannah Stutchbury will be remembered in particular for her defence of Kiambu forest against environmental destruction from business interests.
