Patrick Zaki is a human rights defender and researcher on human rights and gender for the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR). He has been involved in several national campaigns against violations of civil and political rights in Egypt.
An Egyptian national completing a postgraduate degree in Bologna, Italy, Patrick was arrested on 7 February at Cairo airport, while on his way to make a brief visit home. He has remained in prison since then, facing accusations of multiple terrorism-related offences. Lawyer and family visits have been heavily restricted and Patrick is in an at-risk category of the COVID-19 virus.
On 16 June 2021, Brian Dooley, my Senior Advisor, testified at the Italian Senate on my behalf, at a hearing of the Committee on the case of Patrick Zaki.
